Use pellets made for pellet smoker grills
Wood pellets provide both heat and wood-fired flavour in a pellet smoker. The auger must be able to move them consistently from the hopper to the fire pot, so pellet quality, dryness and ash production can affect how the grill operates. Only use food-grade pellets made for pellet smoker grills. Pellets made for heating furnaces or boilers are not suitable for cooking.
The current Z Grills product is sold in 10 kg bags of 100 percent Australian hardwood pellets. Orders are normally supplied as Heat Beads or Smokin pellets according to available stock. Both are Australian hardwood options used by Z Grills owners. The customer selects the number of bags rather than a specific brand or wood flavour, so the collection page should make that clear.
Choose a practical quantity
Pellet use changes with the grill model, cooking temperature, weather and the number of times the lid is opened. A cold or windy day generally requires more fuel than warm, still weather. High-temperature cooking also uses pellets more quickly than low-temperature smoking.
Choose a quantity based on how regularly you use the grill and whether you have a genuinely dry storage area. Buying more pellets can be convenient for frequent cooks, but a large supply is poor value if the bags are left where they can absorb moisture. The current product options allow customers to choose two, four, six or eight 10 kg bags.
Keep wood pellets dry
Moisture is one of the most common causes of poor pellet performance. Pellets can absorb moisture from humid air even when they still look normal. Damp pellets may light poorly, struggle to maintain temperature, produce inconsistent combustion or swell and set hard inside the hopper and auger tube.
Move an opened bag into a sealed container and keep it off concrete or any surface that may become damp. Do not pour excessive wood dust from the bottom of the bag into the hopper. If the grill will not be used for an extended period, follow the model-specific cleaning guide and remove the remaining pellets rather than using the hopper as long-term storage.

Questions before you choose
Can I select a particular pellet brand or flavour?
The current listing is for Australian hardwood pellets supplied as Heat Beads or Smokin, depending on stock. The selectable option is the number of 10 kg bags. A specific brand or flavour cannot be promised unless the product selector states that it is available.
Can heating pellets be used in a pellet smoker?
No. Use only food-grade wood pellets made for pellet smoker grills. Heating pellets are produced for a different purpose and are not suitable for cooking food. Read the Z Grills wood pellet guide for more information.
How many pellets should I put in the hopper?
Add enough for the planned cooking time, plus a buffer so the grill does not run out partway through the cook. There is normally no need to fill the hopper completely for a short cook. Pellet use varies with temperature, weather and grill size, so experience with your own grill will give the most reliable guide.
How should opened pellets be stored?
Keep them in a sealed container in a dry location and off surfaces that may hold moisture. Pellet bags can contain small air holes and should not be treated as moisture-proof storage. Dry pellets should be firm and should not crumble easily in your hand. See the Z Grills guide or Trimal pellet guide for model-specific care.
