Choose a pellet smoker that suits the way you cook

A pellet smoker uses wood pellets as both the cooking fuel and the source of wood-fired flavour. The controller monitors the temperature inside the grill and feeds pellets from the hopper into the fire pot as they are needed. A fan supplies air to the fire, while an ignition rod lights the pellets during startup. Electricity powers those components, but the heat used for cooking comes primarily from the burning wood pellets in a standard Z Grill.

This controlled system makes a pellet smoker suitable for cooks who want real wood flavour without manually tending a charcoal fire for many hours. You still need to prepare the food, allow enough cooking time, use dry pellets and follow the correct startup, shutdown and cleaning procedures. The grill manages fuel delivery and temperature control, which lets you spend more time monitoring the food rather than constantly adjusting the fire.

Compare cooking area, controls and portability

Start by thinking about how much food you normally cook. A compact grill can be a practical choice for smaller households, balconies, caravans and trips where portability matters. A larger grill provides more rack space for brisket, pork shoulders, multiple trays, family meals and entertaining. Check the product dimensions as well as the stated cooking area, especially if the grill needs to fit under a patio, beside an outdoor kitchen or through a narrow access point.

Controller features also differ between models. Some Z Grills use a straightforward PID controller with a temperature dial. Other models include wireless monitoring and control through the Z Grills Aus app. The Trimal S1 uses its own colour controller, Trimal Aus app and purpose-built cooking modes. Choose these features based on how you will actually cook. Wireless monitoring can be useful during a long cook, while a simple dial controller may be all that is needed for someone who normally stays close to the grill.

Think about the cooking methods you want to use

All of the grills in this collection can handle indirect cooking methods such as smoking, roasting, baking and grilling, but the available high-temperature and direct-cooking options are model-specific. Some Z Grills can be used with a compatible hotplate, skillet, vented grease tray or other accessory. The Trimal S1 has dedicated modes and optional accessories for hotplate cooking, open-flame grilling, pizza, rotisserie and charcoal cooking.

Read the individual product page before ordering if one of those cooking methods is important to you. Do not assume that an accessory or cooking mode shown for one grill will work with another model.

Plan for pellets, power and regular care

A pellet smoker needs a safe outdoor position, access to electricity and food-grade wood pellets made for pellet smoker grills. It does not require gas. Keep pellets dry and avoid treating the hopper as long-term storage, particularly in humid conditions. Moist pellets can become difficult to light, burn inconsistently or swell inside the feed system.

Before the first cook, assemble the grill carefully, complete the recommended initial startup and burn-in process, and read the instructions for your controller. Regular cleaning is also important. Ash in the fire pot, grease around the cooking chamber and restricted airflow can affect operation and may create a fire risk if ignored.

Questions before you choose

Does a pellet smoker need electricity?

Yes. Electricity runs the controller, fan, auger motor and ignition rod. The standard Z Grills models use burning wood pellets to produce the cooking heat. Position the grill where its power lead can be used safely and follow the electrical and outdoor-use instructions supplied with the model. Read how Z Grills pellet smokers work for more detail.

Does a pellet smoker need gas or charcoal?

No gas is required. Standard Z Grills pellet smokers are designed to burn food-grade wood pellets in the fire pot. Do not put charcoal, wood chips or heating pellets into the hopper. The Trimal S1 can support charcoal cooking only when used in the specific charcoal mode with the correct Trimal accessory and the current Trimal instructions.

Can pellets stay in the hopper between cooks?

Dry pellets can usually remain in a standard Z Grill hopper between regular cooks. If the grill will not be used for an extended period, or if the weather is humid, remove the remaining pellets and store them in a sealed container. Follow the Z Grills pellet guide or Trimal cleaning guide for your model.

What can I cook in a pellet smoker?

Pellet smokers are useful for brisket, ribs, pulled pork, chicken, sausages, roasts, vegetables, bread and pizza, along with many everyday meals. The exact temperature range and direct-heat options depend on the model and accessories. Check the Z Grills guide or Trimal S1 overview if you need a particular cooking mode.

Which pellet smoker is right for me?

Compare the usable rack area, external dimensions, portability, controller, included bundle items and compatible accessories. A smaller grill may be easier to move and store. A larger grill may be better for entertaining and long cooks with several cuts of meat.
